I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes three months back. I crave for sweets and I feel natural sweeteners would help me control this craving once in a while. Are sweeteners safe to eat? Which ones have you tried and would recommend?
Non-nutritive sweeteners (eg, sachharin, aspartame, asccsulfame-K, and sucralose, Stevia - Natural Sweetener) offer no energy, and as they sweeten with little volume, they can also be referred to as high intensity sweeteners.
The acceptable daily intake of non-nutritive sweeteners is 50mg/kg body weight. Some sweeteners are considered Generally Recognised As Safe (GRAS) ingredients and others are considered food additives.
