Learn More About collagen

What is collagen?

Collagen (Greek work : kolla, meaning : glue) is a protein that provides structure to various parts of the body, especially skin. It is a major building block of skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. It can be thought of as a 'glue' that holds these things together.

How does collagen help?

Collagen is made of densely packed fibres and provides structure to skin, fibrous cartilage, connective tissue and tendons.

It is found in layers of the skin.

What are the sources of collagen?

The precursor of collagen is known as procollagen. It is made by combining glycine and proline amino acids. This requires Vitamin C. High quality protein (meat, poultry, sea food, dairy, legumes, tofu) are great sources of amino acids.

To help your body produce abundance of collagen protein, you need to intake the following nutrients :

  • Vitamin C (Citrus fruits, bell peppers, etc)
  • Proline (Egg whites, dairy products, Wheat germ, etc)
  • Glycine (Chicken skin, gelatin etc.)
  • Copper (Organ meats, sesame seeds, cocoa powder etc.)

How can you preserve collagen?

Collagen production reduces with age. Here are some tips to preserve the collagen present in your body :

  • Avoiding refined carbs : Sugar interferes with collagen’s ability to repair itself.
  • Smoking : Smoking reduces collagen production. This could lead to early signs of ageing and wrinkles. It also hampers wound healing.
  • Excessive sun exposure : Ultraviolet radiation could reduce collagen production. Excessive sun exposure should be avoided.

Supplemention of collagen imparts glow to the skin, increases skin elasticity, minimises fine lines and wrinkles and delays signs of ageing.
